Jessica Alba Flawlessly Explained Why Moms Are the Best People for Any Job
Moms have learned a thing or two—or seventeen!—about getting things done. Nothing other than becoming a mother can give someone the special and useful skillset that has been finely honed over years of juggling multiple schedules, figuring budgets, keeping up with the details, and remembering everything — while also being deeply invested in the happiness, health, and wellbeing of the people they're managing. It is quite astounding how they manage to do it all despite running on little sleep and little self-care. Not that they should operate on practically nothing; the idea is simply that mothers are incredibly strong and capable.
Unfortunately, due in large part to patriarchy, these almost superhuman qualities aren't widely acknowledged in the professional world. Simply because it's never been thought impressive enough, "mom" won't be on many resumes. Being able to handle the daily grind has always been been expected, and few people actively acknowledge that we moms are the titanium gears that maintain the machine in working order.
Jessica Alba, who is a working mother herself, spoke openly about this on September 13 at Fairchild Media Group's Women in Power event in New York City. As the multimillion dollar brand The Honest Company's creator and chief creative officer, Alba has dealt with more than her fair share of debunking the absurd misconception that mothers somehow aren't as valued in the profession. She notes that she confronted it from the very beginning of her company.
She revealed this during a Q&A session at the event. "The initial gentlemen that I started the firm with just kept stating that there's no women who want to work when they have kids," she said. This idea astounded Alba because she had discovered the complete opposite to be true. Having children encouraged me to want to start a whole business, she said. Like, there was something about having children that inspired me to put in much more effort.
Additionally, Alba firmly believes that mothers make excellent employees. "Moms are also the most productive workers, in my opinion, if they worked with greater purpose. She continued, "Moms are always the most dependable and responsible type of employees. They can multitask, and the work is just so buttoned up and neat.
Why would anyone ever believe that mothers "don't want to work" then? Burnout is the key, as Alba nailed in the Q&A. Women quit their jobs because they're sick of being ignored and undervalued.
It appears that mothers are king when it comes to essential contributions to the workplace. The next time you're drowning in laundry, diapers, or schlepping kids to after-school activities, keep in mind that you're also honing essential talents via unmatched experience, not just performing the menial things that moms "should" do. Furthermore, you must never, ever undervalue that.
